Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about familytree.chat. Can't find what you're looking for? Contact us.
What is a GEDCOM file?
GEDCOM (.ged) is the standard file format for sharing genealogy data. Virtually every genealogy website and application can export your family tree as a GEDCOM file.
Where do I get my GEDCOM file?
You can export a GEDCOM from Ancestry.com, MyHeritage, FamilySearch, Family Tree Maker, Gramps, MacFamilyTree, and most other genealogy software. Look for "Export" or "Download GEDCOM" in your tree settings. On the upload page, click "How do I export a GEDCOM?" for step-by-step instructions.
Is my family tree data private?
Yes. Your GEDCOM file is stored securely and is only accessible to you (and anyone you explicitly share it with). We do not sell your data, and we only share it with service providers as needed to operate the service. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
What AI model powers the chat?
familytree.chat uses Claude, built by Anthropic. Relevant tree data is sent to Claude to answer your questions. See our Privacy Policy for details about how your data is handled.
What are the plan limits?
The Free plan allows 1 tree and 20 messages per month. Hobby ($4/mo) allows 3 trees and unlimited messages. Pro ($9/mo) allows unlimited trees and unlimited messages.
Can I share my tree with family members?
Yes! From your Account page, click the Share button next to any tree to generate a shareable link. Anyone with the link can chat with your tree using their own account.
What happens if I upload the same file twice?
familytree.chat detects duplicate uploads by content hash and will reuse the existing tree rather than creating a duplicate.
How do I cancel my subscription?
You can manage your subscription from the Account page. Cancellations take effect at the end of the current billing period.
What genealogy software is supported?
Any software that exports GEDCOM format is supported. This includes Ancestry, MyHeritage, FamilySearch, Family Tree Maker, Gramps, MacFamilyTree, Reunion, RootsMagic, and many more.
How large can my GEDCOM file be?
We support large GEDCOM files. Very large trees (hundreds of thousands of individuals) may take a moment to process.
